CHAPTER 12

On Saturday, June 15, my birthday, I took a Trailways bus to Washington, D.C. Jeffrey met the bus. He didn’t seem to know it was my birthday, so I didn’t tell him.

At eight-thirty we went to hear a concert by the U.S. Naval Band on the Potomac, near the Watergate. It was my favorite kind of night. Tennessee Williams hot. The stars were twinkling on the Potomac. The orchestra played excerpts from Rhapsody in Blue and West Side Story. Jeffrey held my hand. I knew coming to Washington was the right decision. First thing Monday I would look for a job.

After the concert, we went back to his apartment. I looked at the furniture, the dishes, the food in the refrigerator, the clothes hanging in the closet, the inside of the medicine cabinet. Nothing was familiar.

Jeffrey said he was tired so we went to bed. He fell asleep almost the minute he got into bed. I was restless. I wasn’t as confident about my decision anymore. I watched the sky turn from dark to dawn. Just as it was getting light, Jeffrey reached out to me and called me Carol.
